The actual working title of this ongoing project is ‘Horses & Phonies’. I once started this because I regularly came across books about horses and horseriding in local thrift shops and I thought it would be fun to make collages with them. Horses turned out to be particularly suitable for cutting out so I made a bunch of unlikely horse characters. I first showed these I exhibited at the Pictoplasma Festival in 2016. The project then ended up on the shelf. Recently i.e. 2021, I picked it up again and made some hundred new collages. I hope to expand this family even more and turn it into a book one day…
Niels Kalk is an artist based in Berlin and the Netherlands. He has a knack for drawing characters, cutting & pasting collages and creating album covers.
